merge replication, subscriber can only download but not upload?

Hi,

I need a urgent help! The problem is that every synchronization only transfer data from subscriber to publisher, but not the other direction. The publisher is sql server 2005 standard edition, and the subscriber is 2005 express. Is that any stored-procedure to deal with such a problem?

Thanks for any commnet.
can you describe your problem in more detail - is this a filtered publication, or are there any other publication/article properties that are set that we should know of? Can you describer the changes made at the publisher that should be arriving at the subscriber?|||Thx for reply.

The publication is not filtered, and just a normal, standard merge replication. The situation is that I prepared each subscriber locally with the publisher, and they were running well when testing. After that, I took them to different remote locations. The subscribers now are communicating with the publisher by adsl VPN tunnel. What happened is that some of the subscribers only can download changes from the publisher, but cannot upload the changes to the publisher. So what i can do is to delete the subscriptions and re-create them. After that, they are working well.

I really want to know what on earth the problem is.

Thx for any consideration.

Heloo WII,

There is an option which is like "Subscribers download-only, prohibit changes" while creating the publication.

Its default is "Bidirectional".

The Merge Agent which is at the subscriber may not be working. Check out its History by clicking on its job and selecting View History.

|||Thanks, Ekrem.

But most of other subscribers can upload changes to the publisher. So I'm really confused what's going on with the ones that not working properly.

BTW, does the replication on SQL 2005 express change a lot? 'coz our system is working fine with the combination of sql server 2000 standard & MSDE.

Anyone can recommend some articles or books about the sql server 2005 merge replication? the more detailed the better.

Thanks a lot.
|||

No. You will see virtually the same thing regardless of whether it is Express Edition, Workgroup, Standard, etc. You're going to have to provide a lot more detail on this.

1. What is your configuration

2. Are the subscribers actually connecting to the publisher and staying connected long enough to complete a synch cycle (upload first, resolve conflicts, and then download changes)

3. Are there any error messages

The more information that you give us, the better we can help.

|||Thanks Michael,

Because I'm new to SQL Server, actually I'm quite clear where to find the useful information. so sorry about that.

1. I'm using pull replication, non-filtered publication.

2.yes, i think so. the publisher and subscribers are connected by dedicated VPN tunnels.

3.yes, heaps....after each synchronization, each subscriber got the same error message "The process was successfully stopped. (Source: MSSQL_REPL, Error number: MSSQL_REPL-2147200963). Get help: http://help/MSSQL_REPL-2147200963".
And in the SQL Server Log, i can find such kind of error message "Subscriber 'xxx' subscription to article 'docket_items' in publication 'yyy' failed data validation." Even I re-created the subscription from the scratch, it still came out. So I guess something wrong with the publisher?
|||We're going to need a lot more information than you could possible add to a forum post. Please open a support case with Microsoft and be prepared to send them backups of the publisher, subscriber, msdb, and distribution databases along with error logs and event logs. They'll have more specific information as well when you get to a support engineer.|||Thanks Michael, thank you so much.

I think you are right. I'll do that.

Thanks for all the comments.

|||These are the articles that failed the data validation, and there are much more other articles passed the data validation.

I'm just wondering that why not keep replicating when the row count is different between the subscriber and the publisher. isn't the replication's purpose to make them same?

I'll appreciate any comment. Thank you. I'm really desperate now.
|||

If you do not care about the validations, then you should look at your merge agent job and remove tihs part:

"-Validate 3". What this tells the merge agent is to do a validation and stop if there are errors.

Remove this and it will continue to pass.

However please do look at the real reason why there are differences between the publisher and the subscriber in the first place.

|||Thanks Mahesh,

I did put that parameter in the script.

Thank you very much!

|||These are the articles that failed the data validation, and there are much more other articles passed the data validation.

I'm just wondering that why not keep replicating when the row count is different between the subscriber and the publisher. isn't the replication's purpose to make them same?

I'll appreciate any comment. Thank you. I'm really desperate now.
|||

|||Thanks Mahesh,

I did put that parameter in the script.

Thank you very much!

merge replication problem ; very urgent

We have a publisher and 2 subsribers. The subscribers are spanning 2 transactions/sec. We have inplemented merge replication and it was scheduled to occur every 5 min. When we start the replication, the replications is going on without any problem for sometime(may be some hours), but after that it failes with the message, "the process could not deliver inserts at the publisher". We have SAN. When I searched for this error in google, it asked me to increase the queytimeout value in agent profile. So I increased it from 300 to 600, but in vain. If anybosy could help me in this, that would be great.

Thanks,

Preethi.

Hi Preethi,

Is this SQL 2000 or SQL 2005?
Is there a large amount of data yet to be propagated across when this failure occurs?
Are any other processes running on the Publisher machine that are taking up the CPU or memory and hence the merge agent timing out?
Are there any constraints on the publisher that are making the inserts to fail?
Can you post the complete error message from the Merge agent.
Also a higher verbosity log will help. Run the merge agent with the parameter -OutputVerboseLevel 2 or 3.|||sql 2000.
we have 4 merge agents running thats it.
i took an error log with the high verbosity level.
In job history, the error is "remote procedure call failed and it didn't execute".
In the log that I took, the above error message i gave occured. Actually when we started replication fresh, it ran for 4 days for transaction rate 75K/hr. Now even with 12K/hr it is failing in 3 min.

Regarding error i will post it.|||Are you using any agent profile to run the merges?
When you changed the Timeout value, where did you change it?
Try increasing the timeout and logintimeout values. Set -QueryTImeout 1000 -LoginTimeout 1000 and see if it helps.

Another thing you could try is setting the -UploadGenerationsPerBatch and -DownloadGenerationsPerBatch to a low value say 25 and run the merge agent.

Merge Replication Problem (Urgent)

Dear All,
I have an error message when I'm trying to synchronize from SQL Server
Ce to SQL Server 2000.
The error message is
"The process could not deliver the snapshot to the subscriber"
I already know that I need to verify that the IIS user your SQL Server
CE Server Agent is running under has READ permissions to this folder.
But I don't know how to verify that?
You can see my sqlserverce authentication and IIS configuration on the
attachement.
Pls give me some ideas to solve it out?
Thanks

Merge Replication over Internet with MSDE and Sql Server (Urgent)

Hello,
I would like to setup Merge Replication between a central Sql Server as
publisher and a variety of MSDE clients as subscribers. The catch that I am
running into is that I want to be able to do this over the Internet. I have
set this up with SQL CE, so I assume that it is possible with MSDE, however,
I just can't seem to find any documentation on this. I would appreciate it
if someone could tell me if this is possible or not.
Other questions I have (but have not research a ton for yet are)
1) How can I programatically kick off a sync on the MSDE from a .NET
application?
2) If conflicts occur, how can I programatically get the conflicts back to
the client application to display in a form and allow the user to resolve
them?
It is frustrating that this is so easy with SQL CE and here I can't seem to
figure out how to do it with MSDE.
Thanks so much for your help.
Marie
Create your publication for anonymous pull. Use the merge ActiveX control on
the subscriber to pull the subscription.
You will need to specify the publisher name, network name (ie ipaddress or
FQDN), and transport mechanism using Publisher, PublisherAddress, and
PublisherNetwork properties respectively.
Check out this link for more info.

|||Actually I am a little wrong on question 2. With Windows Synchronization
Manager, you click on your subscription, click on properties, click on
other, and select Resolve Conflicts Interactively.
You can also use the Microsoft SQL Conflict Resolver control for this.

|||BTW - your answer to number 2 is AFAIK - no. When you set up your merge
publication for interactive conflict resolution, pull it using Windows
Synchronization Manager, and a conflict occurs you get a dialog telling you
a conflict has occured and to contact your system administrator.
At this point you can educate your users to open the Conflict Resolver on
their own, or simply to contact you and you can resolve them.

Merge Replication Failed - Urgent Please

I have two databases A & B which have a merge replication between them. Both are live data. I wanted to alter table in db A, so i deleted subscription and altered the table from db A. After that i rebuilt the replication between A & B with initialization but now my replication fails. Every time i get different error messages..recently i get message of 'Subscriber failed to initialize'. Could anyone suggest how to resolve this? Urgent please.

Hello,

Which one is the subscriber, A or B?

What kind of alter table did you perform, such as add/drop column or change the definition of the table?

After the ALTER TABLE, the table schema is different from each other, right?

When the replication was rebuilt, was it a pull subscription or push subscription?

Thanks.

|||A is the publisher and B is the subscriber. I alter the table with increasing the datatype width from 9-50 varchar. After update the schema of A is different from each other. Replication is push from publisher.|||

Try this -

Alter the table on A back to what it was.

Set up the replication with NoSync scenario, as @.sync_type = 'NONE' in the sp_addmergesubscription (see http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms187717.aspx).

Make a dummy sync.

Alter table again on A to increasing the width of the desired datatype

Sync again.
