Merge Replication works then fails, works then fails, and so on
publisher/distributor and 35 clients. The merge uses continuous
replication. At the moment, 31 of the 35 subscriptions have error this
error:
The process could not check existence of generation at the 'Subscriber'.
(Source: Merge Replication Provider (Agent); Error number: -2147201003)
General network error. Check your network documentation.
(Source: SERVER002 (Data source); Error number: 11)
Occasionally some will start working again; and then later fail again. I'm
sure that all permissions must be correct because they work 70 to 80 % of
the time. I don't understand why so many fail so frequently though, and
then why they start working again. Also, there are 2 that NEVER fail with
this message.
Any ideas? I do have a separate schedule to restart all the replication
jobs every hour just in case they are not running - but that is a band-aid.
Thanks,
Rob Kraft
general network error almost always means that the connection has been
broken - its a network failure problem not a problem with SQL Server or
replication.

Merge replication sync fails with error code 80040E19 on handheld
Hi;
We are performing merge replication between SQL Server 2005 and SQL Server Mobile with more than 1100 handheld, and recently replications are terminating with eror code 80040E19.
We can only avoid the problem by deleting the related user's partition directory and reruning the related user's dynamic snapshot.
Any advice on this issue would be appreciated
Thanks,
Hakan Gümüs
Due to the cyclic affect of when it occurs, it seems it may correlate to Retention period of the publication. This is difficult to say as we don't fully understand what happens when the expiration period is reached. The only thing we do know is that Reinitializing the subscriptions works every time.
It is also a guess that it may have something to do with the number of simultaneous replications occuring. Possibly some data at some point gets corrupted or out of sync. We did not see the error during our pilot when we only had a couple of dozen units in the field. Our users by the way replicate twice a day - morning and night, so there are periods of high activity.
Please, if you find out any additional information to this issue, let me know. It has plagued us now for over 6 months. I'll be happy to share whatever information that I can to help solve this issue for good.

This doesn't make sense to me as it is an automatic process. Also, it
looks like it is complaining about a 'dbo.MSmerge_cont...' view which

Merge Replication Push using IP address fails? WTF?
I have a Merge publication that has multiple subscribers. They are all SQL Express, so it's all Push Subscriptions.
When I try to add a subscriber by it's IP address, the snapshot gets delivered. Schema created, data loaded, but I see the following error in Replication Monitor:
The merge process was unable to deliver the snapshot to the Subscriber. If using Web synchronization, the merge process may have been unable to create or write to the message file. When troubleshooting, restart the synchronization with verbose history logging and specify an output file to which to write. (Source: MSSQL_REPL, Error number: MSSQL_REPL-2147201001)
Cannot find the object 'MSmerge_ctsv_E0801EECCA824BB29D48D36D64D2BAEA', because it does not exist or you do not have permission. (Source: MSSQLServer, Error number: 15151)
When I change the IP address in the script to the name of the machine it works perfectly. The ONLY thing I changed in the script was the IP address to the name.
The reason for this is that I have several client machines that will have connectivity, but NO name resolution back at the Server.
Please, Please, Please help!

execsp_addmergesubscription
@.publication = N'TestPub',
@.subscriber = N'10.126.22.30',

@.job_login =null, @.job_password =null,
@.subscriber_security_mode = 0,
@.subscriber_login = N'Valid SQL LOGIN',
@.subscriber_password = N'ValidPassword',
@.publisher_security_mode = 1,
@.frequency_type = 64,
@.frequency_interval = 0,
@.frequency_relative_interval = 0,
@.frequency_recurrence_factor = 0,
@.frequency_subday = 0,
@.frequency_subday_interval = 0,
@.active_start_time_of_day = 0,
@.active_end_time_of_day = 235959,
@.active_start_date = 20070607,
@.active_end_date = 99991231,
@.enabled_for_syncmgr = N'False'
Pushing to an IP address is not supported. No doubt that is why it is failing. You must push to the server name. However you can setup an Alias and push to that. I think the Alias must match the server name.
I did read somewhere that Aliases may not be supported either but I know that does work. You could also consider adding entries to your hosts file.

Merge replication losing changes.
Hi,
I am facing a wierd problem while sync'ing. When I am do a synchonize from a mobile device to the server DB, one of my table column fails to update while all other columns get updated.
The table uses row level tracking (tried making it column level too) and the field which fails to update is a date field (Nullable).
This happens in case of syncing after updating >1 records on device. But syncing after updating just 1 record on device, this date field gets updated as expected.
Note: I have filters set for this table. The filter downloads fields only with this date field=null.
I need to downlaod all records meeting this filter condition but at the same time, this filter should not be applied while uploading changes as I think this is what the problem is.
If anyones has faced this and got a solution, please let me know.
Thanks.
What exactly does your filter look like?
|||Do you have any default constraints on the date column or any triggers that could be affecting this column and hence affecting your expected output?
Also are you using vertical partitioning where some of the columns in the table do not go to the subbscriber? And is it that this date column is positioned after a column that is vertically filtered out?
It would be great if you can narrow down the problem and send the publication/article creation scripts.
Typically this is how a filter works:
Lets say you have a filter subset_filterclause= 'age > 20'
Now initially all the rows at the publisher that match this criteria will be downloaded, others that dont qualify will not be downloaded.
Furthermore, inserts/updates at the publisher which make rows qualify this filter will be downloaded to the subscriber.
Finally, all inserts/updates at the subscriber whether they qualify the filter or not will be uploaded to the publisher. Now all the rows that did not qualify the filter will be downloaded as deletes to the subscriber and will be delete at the subscriber.
I am trying to understand you scenario and here is what I understand:
you are saying that if you update 1 row from age=40 to age=20, you will see this update go to the publisher. But if you update 10 rows from age=40 to age=20, they will not go to the publisher?

Merge replication fails with odd message
I've got a merge replication set up between boxes. They're on separate sites both behind an ADSL Nat modem router. The publisher connects to the subscriber via a port forward / Nat translation at the router. This replication set up has been running for some months now. This morning I got this failure message from the merge agent on the publisher.
"the specified remote server name may not be the network name of the remote server or the remote server is unreachable due to network problems. The step failed"
Currently the Enterprise Mgr at the publisher can see the subscriber as can query analyzer running on the publisher.
The host name of the subscriber is the same name used in the server registration at the publisher. The registration uses a Client Network Utility alias to resolve the name.
If I run a ping command at the publisher using the subscribers name I get replies (the resolution of that name is done via a hosts file entry)
Both machines are Win2k Server boxes running SQL Server 2000 Standard.
Any ideas why the agent can't see the subscriber despite the fact its usual communications channel is working just fine?I've still no idea why I was getting this behaviour but I've reinitialised the subscriptions now and the problem's 'gone'.

These errors are normally transitory. Try restarting your merge agent.

Merge replication fails
Finally snapshot is generated.
Then i create a pull subscription (i am using merge replication). But after executing 193 actions it gives following error
Line 1: Incorrect syntax near 'No_'
Details are as follow.
1. The subscription has been marked for reinitialization. Reinitialization will occur the next time you synchronize this subscription.
2. Category:SQLSERVER
Source: IM66\WM_MSDE
Number: 170
Message: Line 1: Incorrect syntax near 'No_'.
3. Category:NULL
Source: Merge Replication Provider
Number: -2147201001
Message: The process could not deliver the snapshot to the Subscriber.
4. Line 1: Incorrect syntax near 'No_'. The step failed.
Please Help.
Do i need to create a snapshot again? ( It takes almost 2-3 hours to create a snapshot of 995 articles).
Hi,
Is this SQL 2000 or SQL 2005?
Do you have any tables like %No_%?
Are there any special characters in this name?
Can you narrow down which table is it failing on?|||
It's SQL 2000.
There are lots many table having No_ as primary key.
Above history i have taken from Job History.
From where can i get the exact table name?
When i right click on merge agent and click on Error Details , i see following info.
Category Source Number
Data Source Subscriber Name 170
Agent Merge Replication Provider -2147201001
Please help.
|||995 articles is certainly a large publication. Are they all table articles, or are some of the stored procedures, views, functions, etc.?I recomment you split this into two publications, one for just schema objects (stored procedures, views, functions, etc.) and one for table articles. This way if you change a stored procedure, it'll be much easier to propogate it to all the subscribers by reinit'ing just that one publication with schema objects, as opposed to a single publication with 995 objects.
and vice versa, if you need to reinit due to a change in a table article, then you don't have to spend valuable time regenerating bcp files, scripts, etc. for all 995 objects, just for that subset.|||
Can you query table MSmerge_history in distribution database and see if there are more details leading up to the failure? WHen applying the snapshot, it might tell you what file it's trying to apply. If you open that file, you may be able to see the TSQL that's failing.
If the history table doesn't tell you anything, can you change the -HistoryVerboseLevel from 1 to 2, as well as pipe the output of the merge agent to a file by using -Output "c:\somefilename.txt". If you open up your merge agent profile, you can add or modify these parameters. THen rerun the merge agent.
Is this SQL Server 2000 Sp4?
|||They are all table articles. I have not included schema objects yet.Actually i am trying to implement replication for navision. I am using Microsoft Business Solution Navision (With sql option).
|||
I have SQL Server 2000 with Sp4.
On the distributor side there is no Msmerge_history, instead Msmerge_genhistory is there. I opened it but is contains data which gives information regarding snapshot generation.
Then i created a new merge agent profile. with -Historyverboselevel set to 2. where can i find -Output property. There is no such property in agent's profile.
Please help.
|||You have to add the parameter to the existing profile, or you can create your own custom profile. Just add -Output "<some file name>". If you still need help with this, please reference: http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms221382.
