Merge replication?

We have 2 sites which are normally connected by a 10mb fixed line, I'm
looking for a backup should this link fail. Both sites use the same software
connected to a sql server database. If the link fails both sites should be
able to continue in a limited capacity and once the link is restored the
data should synchronise.
I've been looking at this for a little while and merge replication seem to
be the right solution, however I would like to know if anyone could give me
any other options?

1) merge
2) transactional replication with queued updating - good where most of the
updates happen on the subscriber
3) bi-directional replication - good when your tables are naturally
partitioned.
Merge is the best solution as you can resolve conflicts. When a conflict
occured with queued you can only view the conflict, you can resolve it in
Conflict Viewer. Queued also works best when most transactions occur on the
publisher, not the subscriber.
Bi-directional replication does not have any mechanism to handle conflicts,
the jobs fail and you have to manually fix everything - similar to queued
really. Bi-directional replication is also harder to do schema changes on.
Merge and Queued add a GUID column to your underlying tables, bi-di
transactional doesn't.

you have duplicate primary keys, it will halt. If you update a nonexistent
row, update one side and delete other side, it will halt. It will NOT halt
if you update the same piece of data on both sides to different values. The
last one in will win and you will have zero indication that a previously
saved value has now been overridden which can create severe issues with the
business.
Also, replication halts in two cases. This is a very undesirable thing to
do. You can't exactly halt the transaction flow from applications, so
additional transaction begin piling up on both sides because replication is
halted. This not only dramatically increases latency, but it also has an
increasing potential to generate even more conflicts which can put you in
the same situtation with teh agents halting causing a further backup in
transactions, etc. until you hit the point where someone deems replication
to be completely nonfunctional and starts pointing fingers at the
replication engine. It has nothing to do with the replication engine, but
entirely due to the way the engine is being used and the design being
implemented.
The 2 conditions I outlined are the only way I would EVER implement a bi-di
system. I've been doing this since Sybase Rep Server 1.0 against Sybase
System 10. I've watched more than one bi-di system, 2 of them my own
designs, become complete toast because those 2 conditions were violated.
You get burned enough times, you learn not to keep sticking you hand in the
fire.
If you want to deal with conflicts being thrown in a bi-di system, that is
you choice. I certainly wouldn't want to be the one sitting in that seat,
because I know all too well just what kind of havoc a single conflict can
cause in that type of implementation. I also prefer to not have to babysit
a replication system 24 hours a day because I've placed a design that has a
flaw which can only be overcome with manual intervention and a decision by
an IT person who isn't necessarily qualified to make a call on the data.

Merge replication trouble

Hello
I have made a merge replication between two server W2k with sql2000 sp3. Those servers are connected via internet. In distributor (also publisher) I have setting up aliases for both servers. Have generated snapshot but when agent run I have this error: -2
147201019 and 14010 : "the subscription for pubblication [bla bla] is invalid".
I have searching in the net some solutions but I have noticed that in all cases it is depended by alias setting. But I have defined its ?
Some ideas ?
Have solved the puzzle.
In subscription I have noticed with sp_helpserver that the subscription server hav id = 1 so have do this:
sp_dropserver 'DIST_SERVER'
sp_dropserver 'SUB_SERVER'
sp_addserver 'SUB_SERVER', @.local = 'LOCAL'
where DIST_SERVER is my distribution, publisher server and SUB_SERVER is my subscription server.

OK, and the last 2 commands will require a restart of the services.
I'm not clear what the first line is for though (sp_dropserver 'DIST_SERVER').

Merge replication odd question

Hello,
I need to configure a merge replication between 3 machines, one of these is never connected with the other two machines. I've tried to work with the off-line machine with backup and restore to the offline machine and the others in this way: I backup up a
subscripted DB and restored to the offline machine, update some data and then backup and restore again on the subscripted DB. It breaks the synchronization.
Do you think there is a way to "freeze" a subscribed DB, move it to another off-line machine (moving backups or data and log files, or something else), work on this machine and then restore the updated DB to the freezed one?
And do you think it will work also between a SQL server 2000 publisher and an MSDE subscriber?

This certainly is an odd request.
I think it might work if you use the keep_replication switch of the restore command while you are restoring your database.

|||But Hilary, if we RESTORE over the top of one of the two connected databases
the database that was disconnected then we will lose at the very least all
transactions that happened between the two connected databases won't we?
It is almost as though we want to RESTORE to a 3rd DB with KEEP_REPLICATION
and then fire up the Agents.
Not even sure if that will do it.

|||OK so here was my testing
Create 3 databases
M1,M2,M3
M1 = Publisher
M2,M3 = Subs
Create a table (I used a very simple table with IDENTITY())
Create an article of the table (Handle Identity ranges)
Add to a publication
Start cooking
--Now remove M3 from the topology so we can put it on the laptop for however
long we want and continue to work on it (watch identity ranges if a long
time)
--stop the merge agent and drop the database
--Restore somewhere else with KEEP_REPLICATION
Must be restored as M3 otherwise you get the following when inputting data
ERROR!!
INITCOLVS: The Parameter 'nickname' is invalid
--Input data
Backup from this box now and restore to the original (WITH KEEP_REPLICATION)
Start up the Merge agent
In it goes.

If you have a subscriber, and you backup that database, and restore it to the 3rd machine using the keep replication switch, make your changes, backup the database and restore it to the second machine, again using keep replication, this should work.
You must have replication installed on the third machine however.
This is a variation of the way you can deploy susbcribers using a backup and restore.

Merge Replication Could not connect

Hi!
I have problem with Merge Replication between two SqlServers connected via
internet.
After i configured publication and subscriber, when i trying to synhronize
i'm obtaining The process could not access to the Subscriber"

Are you using FTP? You should be using FTP. Also can the subscriber ping the
publisher and vice versa.

Merge Replication between two servers not connected via internet and on two separate domains

I have two sql server 2000 databases and I wish to do merge replication between them, the problem is that they are not connected via the internet (no ping) and are on two separate domains in different countries.

I can use email and I can use encrypted ftp.

I am wondering if I could use sql ce merge replication to a pocket pc which creates an sdf file, that I then email backwards and forwards and build identical publication and subscriptions at either server to merge sync with this sdf file through a pocket pc.

Has anyone done this before?

Does anyone have any other suggestions?

It's not going to be possible. Merge replication is built with partners that can publish/subscribe to each other. If all you have is email/ftp, you will have to roll your own "merge" - take look at bcp/bulkload/dts in book online.
